Abstract: Lipidomics based on mass spectrometry is now commonly used for lipid analysis. Large projects such as screens of mutant collections for alterations in lipid composition and genome wide association studies, using lipid levels as phenotypes, provide information about the roles of specific lipids and proteins involved in lipid regulation or metabolism.  On the other hand, most lipidomic analyses are not fully quantitative, and there tends to be variation in quantification among laboratories. The Plant and Algal Interest Group of the International Lipidomics Society is conducting a ring trial in which phospholipids and galactolipids are being quantified by about 13 laboratories.
