Welcome to Biochemistry at Iowa State!

Welcome, incoming biochemistry majors! Your new program is excited to welcome you. We have prepared this webpage to provide information supplemental to your orientation. We hope you will find the links below useful to help prepare for your first advising meeting to plan and register for your Fall semester classes.

Note: You can choose to major in biochemistry in either the Colleges of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) or the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS). Regardless of your College, all biochemistry majors have the same home Department known as BBMB: The Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology (BBMB).

Planning your first-semester schedule

Your first step in developing your first-semester schedule is speaking with your Academic Advisor (contact info below). 

If you attend OnCyte Orientation, you will meet with your Advisor on the morning on Day 2. This appointment has already been scheduled for you and you'll receive the details once you arrive at OnCyte Orientation.

For additional structure in planning your schedule, you might reference the following:

  • Sample 4-year plans for each of the Biochemistry specializations:
    • Research and Biotechnology
    • Pre-Medicine (designed for pre-health students interested in medical school, pharmacy school, or dental school, and may also serve those interested in veterinary school)
    • Biophysics
    • Note: Your Biochemistry specialization focuses your program of study for your career goals. We will discuss specializations during orientation and in Learning Community. You may switch options any time.
  • Menu links at the left (Course options in Introductory Biochemistry, Chemistry, English, Math, and other courses)
